Presso Le Spose di Milano ho avuto il piacere e l’onore di conoscere uno dei più grandi designer di abiti da sposa di fama internazionale: sto parlando di Lazaro Perez, designer del brand Lazaro Bridal, noto anche per le trasmissioni televisive come Say yes to the dress!
La nostra è stata una semplice chiacchierata, nessuna domanda pronta, è stato quindi un incontro molto spontaneo e naturale durante il quale ho potuto apprezzare non solo la gentilezza e la cordialità di Lazaro ma anche tanti dettagli del suo lavoro e delle sue passioni.
Per Lazaro questa è stata la sua prima volta in Italia e mi ha raccontato quanto è rimasto affascinato da Milano di cui ha apprezzato l’unione e la compresenza di antico e moderno, aspetto meno presente a New York, metropoli e ambiente completamente diverso da quello italiano.
Inevitabilmente abbiamo parlato quindi di questa passione in comune per i viaggi e incuriosita gli ho chiesto quanto per lui sia importante viaggiare e scoprire posti nuovi.
Tanto, è stata la sua risposta, il toccare con mano, conoscere nuove culture, vedere con i propri occhi la diversità e trarne spunto, sono elementi di arricchimento per la nostra professione. E non ho potuto che essere d’accordo.
Parlando di viaggi allora ho chiesto se ci sono e quali sono le differenze che ha notato nel corso degli anni tra le spose americane e quelle di altri paesi. Lazaro mi ha subito fatto un confronto tra queste e le giapponesi, al di là delle differenze fisiche e caratteristiche delle due diverse etnie, ha sottolineato come le prime cerchino di personalizzare il più possibile l’abito da loro scelto, chiedendo quindi varie modifiche al designer, che vanno dalla modifica dello scollo, all’aggiunta di dettagli quali applicazioni che risaltano cosi determinati punti dell’abito. Mentre le spose giapponesi in media preferiscono l’abito esattamente com’è stato disegnato.
Parlando di abiti ho chiesto allora quale consiglio dà alle sue spose nel momento della scelta e Lazaro mi ha risposto che dice loro di avere la mente aperta, di non fossilizzarsi solo un modello di abito o su uno stile, ma provarne diversi, anche quelli che non avrebbero mai immaginato di poter indossare. E non c’è consiglio più vero per una sposa che si appresta a cercare l’abito della vita.
Un’altra domanda è stata: quanto influiscono sulle sue creazioni, le sue origini cubane e quanto è importante la tradizione? La risposta è ovvia: ognuno porta dentro di sé un bagaglio di esperienze, esempi e ambizioni che sono dettate dalle nostre origini, dagli esempi che abbiamo avuto, e nel caso di Lazaro parliamo di una madre che ha insegnato design della moda, e da ciò che desidera diventare.
Infine, parlando di tradizioni, mi ha chiesto alcune tradizioni italiane legate al matrimonio e ci siamo sorpresi nel constatare che alcune assomigliano molto a quelle cubane.
Questo è stato il nostro giro del mondo in mezz’ora di chiacchierata: abbiamo toccato davvero tanti argomenti che non riguardavano soltantogli abiti e la moda bridal ma anche e soprattutto cosa sta dietro a tutto questo, quali sono quindi le fonti di ispirazioni, i progetti futuri e chi lo sa, magari un possibile futuro incontro nei prossimi mesi nella grande mela.

At Le spose di Milano I had the pleasure and the honor to meet one of the greatest and world- renowned bridal designers: I’m talking about Lazaro Perez, international designer of Lazaro Bridals, also known for some television shows like Say yes to the dress!
Our chat was a simple one, I did not have any written questions or something like that, so it was a very spontaneous and informal meeting during which I was able to appreciate not only Lazaro’s kindness and friendliness but also many details of his work and his passions.
This was the first time Lazaro came to Italy and he told me that was biwitched about Milan, in fact he could appreciate the harmony and cohesion of ancient and modern, because it is difficult to find these two aspects together in New York. This metropolis has got a completely different environment from the Italian one.
Inevitably we talked about this common passion we have for travel and I asked him how important is to travel and discover new places for him.
So much – was his answer. Learn about new cultures around the world, see with your own eyes the variety of them and could assimilate them, are elements of enrichment for our jobs and I could not agree more.
Talking about travelling, I asked if there were some differences he noticed over the years between American brides and those of the other countries. Lazaro made a comparison between the American one and the Japanese brides, beyond the physical differences and characteristics of the two different groups, he said that the former try to customize as much as possible the wedding dress, so they ask the designer for various changes: for example to modify the neckline, adding details such as applications which could stand out certain points of the gown, and so on. While the latter, on average, prefer the wedding dress exactly how it was designed.
Speaking about gown, I asked which advice he gives to the bride at the moment of the big choice and Lazaro replied that he usually suggests her to have an open mind, not to fossilize herself only on a dress pattern or a style, but try different wedding dresses, even those you would have never imagined to wear. And there is no biggest advice for a bride who is going to try the dress of her life.
Another question I made was: how much his Cuban heritage can influence on his creations, and how important traditions are for him. The answer is obvious: everyone carries within a wealth of experiences, examples and ambitions that are dictated by our origins and our family, and in the case of Lazaro by his mother, because she taught fashion design.
Finally, speaking of traditions, he asked me some Italian traditions related to marriage and we were surprised to find out that some are very similar to the Cuban ones.
This was our tour of the world in half an hour of conversation. We touched many topics that do not concern only wedding dresses and bridal fashion but also what’s behind all of this world: the sources of inspiration, forthcomin projects and who knows, maybe a future meeting in the Big Apple.
